Finding the right log is key with pieces like this: the curl needs to be tight, consistent, and run across the width of the widest boards. The red maples, the so called “soft” maples are the best. Sensible enough, there must be enough lumber in the log to build the entire piece. When you mix maples from different trees, there’s never an exact match. A poodle’s head belongs on a poodle, not on a Shih-Tzu.
